The works consist of the extension of the runway and the development of a modern terminal. For this purpose a sum of 15 million dollars has been approved for this year.
“We intend to continue with the expansion of the Barbuda airport, at the same time we have started discussions with the company and asked them to submit a proposal to extend the runway by about two thousand feet,” the prime minister stressed.
The airport’s runway is currently 6,100 feet long, according to the Associates Times website.
The government will soon decide on the design of the new terminal to accommodate the increase in air traffic and provide better facilities for passengers. The extension of the runway is likely to give a major boost to Barbuda’s tourism sector, making the island more accessible to both regional and international visitors, the prime minister said.
The project will take off by the end of 2025, and is expected to be completed in two years, the source informed.
