More than half of Sudan’s population, about 25 million people, suffer from acute food insecurity in the nation that is approaching its third year of civil war, according to the United Nations agency.
WFP was forced to suspend operations in one of the country’s main displacement camps, Zamzam in North Darfur, due to increased attacks, meaning that thousands of families could starve to death in the coming weeks, especially children, Kinzli warned.
The shelter is home to about half a million people and, since last August, is one of the areas declared in a state of famine, the highest level of food insecurity according to WFP parameters.
