Bonifacio Byrne poetry contest awarded in Cuba

Matanzas, Cuba, Mar 3 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban city of Matanzas today held the awards ceremony for the Bonifacio Byrne provincial poetry contest, one of the most important of its kind in the country. According to the award ceremony for the contest, read by jury member and National Publishing Prize winner Alfredo Zaldívar, the award on this occasion went to the work ¨Las horas que pierdo¨ /The hours I Lose/ by the writer Eduardo González.

Zaldívar explained that the titles ¨El ultimo verso¨ by Guillermo Morales, ¨Los tres lobos¨ by Jonathan Rivero and ¨El memorial vivo¨ by José Lázaro Dean, deserved mentions for the high value of their words.

During the awards ceremony, the figure of the poet whose name the contest bears was remembered, author of such emblematic works as the poem ¨A mi bandera¨, and a transcendental figure in Cuban literature. The curator of the City of Matanzas, Leonel Pérez, highlighted the great literary and journalistic work begun by Byrne in his youth and continued in the struggles for independence and maintained until his death in this, his native city, in 1935.

Born on March 3, 1861 in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, in this western city, Byrne became an author of required reading for those who profess the art of poetry in Cuba.
