Dushanbe, Mar 3 (Prensa Latina) Tajikistan's ruling People's Democratic Party won Sunday's parliamentary elections with 51.9 percent of the votes, Bakhtiyor Khudoyorzoda, chairman of the Central Election Commission, announced on Monday.

Khudoyorzoda said at a press briefing in Dushanbe this Monday that the ruling party won 12 out of 22 seats in the parliamentary elections.

An estimated 220 candidates, including 65 self-nominated candidates, competed for 63 seats in the lower house of Parliament.

Voting was conducted under a mixed system: 41 lawmakers were elected in single-mandate constituencies and 22 in all-republican constituencies.

The new Tajikistan parliament will serve a five-year term. Voter turnout was 85.3 percent.

Of more than 5.5 million citizens eligible to vote, more than 4.7 million did so.
