The initiative, which will last until next April, is being developed under the strategy of house to house visits and in schools, and seeks to obtain an assessment of the nutritional status and determine risk factors in this population nationwide.
In the municipality of Villa El Carmen, in Managua department, the survey started yesterday, under the guidance of co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, with the aim of ensuring good growth and development in children according to their age.
The director of municipal health services of that territory, Maynor Alexander Rodríguez, told the press that this census consists of measuring weight and height in children and according to the measurements, to be able to take their nutrition and body mass index, to determine risk factors that may alter their development.
It also allows for the timely detection of acute malnutrition problems based on the indices found in each child, who will have a specialized assessment with pediatricians and nutritionists, to improve their feeding plan and supplement with multivitamins and minerals.
Rodriguez emphasized the importance of carrying out the census, because if the children are not controlled, they can fall into protein-caloric malnutrition and develop renal insufficiencies in their adulthood and heart problems, while minors with body mass index above the value can develop diabetes and hypertension.
