As every March 5, the Cuban state mission, Ethiopians trained in the Caribbean island (Ethio-Cubans), and the people in general paid tribute to those fallen in that battle that protected the sovereignty and territorial integrity of this country of the African Horn over the Ogaden desert from external expansionist attempts.
Participants put floral offerings before the two murals, which show portraits printed on bronze plaques of the 163 Cuban combatants who fell during the battle in the park popularly known as Tiglachin Monument (Our Struggle Monument, in Amharic).
On March 2, coinciding with the 129th anniversary of Adwa’s victory, members of the diplomatic mission in Havana, Ethio-Cubans, and Cuban residents began works to restore the park, including nearby fountains, the bronze murals, and planting ornamental plants, among others.
The site’s restoration is also part of a program of activities for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Ethiopia on July 18.
In tribute to the 50 years of brotherhood, the Cuban Embassy in Addis Ababa will hold a series of commemorative events and activities to further strengthen the ties of cooperation and solidarity that have characterized the links between the two nations. mh/iff/oda/nmr
