Brazil Justice denies extending defense of coup plotting general

Brasilia, Mar 6 (Prensa Latina) Justice Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil, denied extending the deadline for the defense of former Defense Minister, reserve general Walter Braga Netto, accused today of being a coup-plotter.

De Moraes is the rapporteur in court of the case that deals with the complaint of the Attorney General’s Office about a coup plot in 2022 to prevent the assumption of office of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The magistrate had already denied the request of Braga Netto’s lawyers, but they filed an appeal.

Once again, De Moraes rejected the extension of the deadline and thus, the team has until tomorrow to respond to the indictment.

In addition, the defense again claimed not to have access to all the necessary documents. However, the speaker responded that the lawyers already have “ample access to the evidence already documented, including the evidence mentioned in the complaint.”

The same happened with the defense of former President Jair Bolsonaro, also denounced by the Attorney General’s Office for the coup attempt.

The legal staff of the former president asked for 83 days to respond, time used by the Public Ministry to prepare the complaint.

Bolsonaro has until Thursday night to respond to the complaint.

The expectation is that this will occur when the former head of the Executive returns to Brasilia, at the end of the day, since he spent the carnival party in Angra dos Reis, a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with allies.

The Federal Police pointed out Bolsonaro in November as the alleged person responsible for orchestrating and directing the execution of the failed violent plan, which included attempts to assassinate Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and De Moraes.

According to law enforcement, Braga Netto would have played a key role in these events.

The high-ranking officer tried to manipulate details provided by Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former assistant to Bolsonaro and collaborator in the investigation, even after the latter’s release in September 2023.

Bolsonaro, Braga Netto and 32 other people were charged with the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law and coup d’état.

If the complaint is accepted by the STF, those involved will become defendants and will go on to answer a criminal case in the higher court.
