In statements to the CNews channel, the Head of Government referred to the decisions of the Republican president to directly negotiate peace in Ukraine with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, without counting on Europe or Kiev itself, and of threatening to impose tariffs on Europe.
In the Prime Minister’s opinion, the term “ally” to refer to Washington at present is in question, “by moving into the camp of the adversary, of those who question the international order, declare a trade war and seek the annexation of territories belonging to free countries.” Bayrou thus referred to Trump’s pressures on Ukraine, to which he froze military aid, to sign a peace with Russia rejected by the West and his vision of the threat of Moscow, to his announcements of tariffs against the European Union and to his intentions to control Greenland and take over Canada.
For Bayrou, the United States has not turned into an enemy, but it is questioning everything we believe in, in allusion to the world view assumed by the Western powers.
Trump has unleashed an earth tremor, by modifying alliances by neglecting Ukraine, he said in comments in which he reiterated the thesis insistently repeated in recent weeks by President Emmanuel Macron that Russia represents an expansionist threat on the continent.
Regarding tariffs, Bayrou criticized the U.S. policy of appealing to a trade war with customs duties, a scenario to which he attributed negative consequences for France.
