Latin America seeks independence and not Monroe Doctrine, China says

Beijing, Mar 7 (Prensa Latina) Latin American countries aspire to independence and not to the Monroe Doctrine, the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, defending the ties between Beijing and that region, said.

The minister pointed out that the links between China and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are part of South-South cooperation and do not obey geopolitical calculations.

At a press conference, the Foreign Minister said that the relationship between both parties follows the principles of mutual respect and shared benefit, without hegemonic interests.

The head of diplomacy affirmed that in its relations with Latin American countries, China does not seek a sphere of influence or attack any of the parties.

“What the peoples of Latin America want to build is their own homeland, not someone else’s backyard,” he stressed.

He stressed that Latin American countries welcome cooperation with Beijing because the wishes and needs of the region are respected here.

He recalled that this year marks the tenth anniversary of the official operation of the China-Celac Forum (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) and that China will host the Fourth Ministerial Conference in the first half of the year.

“Since the beginning of the new era, under the guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the leaders of Latin American countries, the building of a China-LAC community with a shared future has made significant progress,” he added.

According to the minister, these results have benefited all the peoples involved, supported by the China-Celac Forum mechanism.

Wang Yi said that both sides will take this opportunity to strengthen ties, eliminate interference and raise cooperation to a new level.
