The announcement was made on Wednesday at a meeting between Cuban Consul General in Caracas Ulises Barquín and the rector of the Venezuelan higher education center, Sandra Oblitas.
The meeting was in compliance with an agreement reached on December 12th on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the first embrace between Commanders Hugo Chávez (1954-2013) and Fidel Castro (1926-2016), organized by the José Martí Cultural Society, Venezuela Chapter, at the headquarters of the university.
Barquín and Oblitas coordinated the placement of Antonio Maceo’s bust at this public university, as his life is linked to the Bolivarian Republic, the sources indicated.
The Bolivarian University of Venezuela was established on July 1, 2003, by a presidential decree signed by the Bolivarian leader.
At the meeting, the diplomat gave his counterpart a letter of greeting from Cuban Ambassador Dagoberto Rodríguez, and it was agreed to place the bust of the Caribbean liberator.
The Cuban Consul General was accompanied by Carlos Madrazo, an embassy official, and Rubén Rodríguez, president of the José Martí Cultural Society in Venezuela. jg/lam/jcd
