During a session in the Senate on Wednesday, Malhuret denounced Trump’s rapprochement with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, describing it as a betrayal in the debate that reiterated support for Ukraine.
“Washington has become the court of Nero, an incendiary emperor, submissive courtiers, and a jester high on ketamine charged with purging the civil service. This is a tragedy for the free world, but it is the first and foremost a tragedy for the United States,” he said at the time.
The jester was an allusion to Musk, who was appointed by Trump to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which, under the discourse of reducing public spending, closes agencies and fires employees.
His comments were widely echoed on social media when Trump is in the limelight for his direct talk with Russia to stop the war, his threats to unleash a tariff crusade, even against traditional allies, and his ambitions regarding Greenland, Canada, Gaza, and the Panama Canal.
