Carla Hernandez, deputy director of teaching at the physics department of the University of Santiago de Chile (Usach), says there is a need for more and more female participation in these areas.
There is always talk that women in science have been historically invisible, but that is the tip of the iceberg, Hernandez told Usach Radio.
According to the recipient of the award as one of the 50 Women Geniuses 2024 in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), within academic institutions there are currently many instances in which there is no gender equity.
She considered that these situations are not going to change if there are no women in decision making and if the possibilities of pursuing a scientific career are unequal.
“I am optimistic about the progress that has been made in gender policies and inclusion, but we must also be aware that there is still much to be done,” she said.
