Algeria will import one million lambs for religious festivity

Algiers, Mar 11 (Prensa Latina) The ravages of the brutal drought suffered in North African countries will be alleviated with the import of one million lambs for the celebration of Eid al Adha, the authorities announced.

The measure was decreed by the Algerian president, Abdel Majid Tebboune, in view of the shortage of rams in the domestic market and the consequent increase in prices, unaffordable for the lower income sectors.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice in Arabic, is one of the two major festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his firstborn son, Ishmael, as an expression of his obedience to Allah. Before the sacrifice took place, Allah provided a sheep to replace Ishmael as the sacrificial victim.

Several countries in the four corners of the African continent are suffering the devastating effects of climate change manifested in prolonged droughts followed by rainstorms causing floods and landslides that devastate infrastructure, crops, livestock, and hundreds of deaths.
