Desolation grips Mozambique after cyclone strikes

Maputo, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Desolation grips the Mozambican landscape today, as locals struggle with the aftermath of cyclone Jude, which has just ravaged this African nation with gusts of up to 120 kilometers and heavy rains.

The downpours caused flooding in this capital and inland areas, resulting in the destruction of infrastructure and homes and the power outages, according to reports from the area.

Jude’s first onslaught was felt in the district of Mossuril, in the province of Nampula (north), the third most important in this mid-African country, a frequent victim of notoriously violent cyclones born in the Indian Ocean.

One can get a grasp of the cyclone’s strength by counting the houses and stores destroyed in the city of Nacala, torn from their foundations by the force of the winds, according to the report of the National Institute of Meteorology (INM),

However, such wreckage is far from being the only damage, as rains have been pouring since 01:00 in the morning and continue to fall with no signs of subsiding in the short term, a report of the INM warned.

To make things worse, the disaster’s magnitude clearly dwarfs the possibilities of providing material assistance to victims, who are locked in what is left of their homes and unable to go out and get food supplies because of the floods.
