Documentary on the Torrijos-Carter Treaties makes an impact in Panama

Panama City, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) The documentary “Son of a Tiger and a Mule, the story of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties is more relevant today than ever in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump's threats to retake the Panama Canal.

Its author, Annie Canavaggio, with more than 20 years of work dedicated to reflecting the reality of Panama, told the press the day before the premiere that the film, winner of the 2016 Film Fund, reveals the diplomatic games played by General Omar Torrijos (1929-1981) to achieve sovereignty over the waterway.

The documentary that arrives tomorrow in theaters, she said, owes its name to writer and journalist Gabriel García Márquez, when he described Torrijos as a cross between a tiger and a mule. He had the stealth of a tiger and the stubbornness of a mule, virtues that made these treaties happen.

Canavaggio underscored her intention that young people should know their history and be part of it and urged them to see the film “to know why we must defend what is and always has been ours,” she said.

According to the film’s producer, María Neyla Santamaría, the story is based on archive images which were accessed through trips to the United States, Colombia, Cuba and Israel.

Interviews were conducted with Aristides Royo, Adolfo Ahumada, Nicolás Arditto Barletta, Omar Jaén, Ricardo de la Espriella, friends and residents of Coclesito who knew General Torrijos´ directive.
