“Right now we are building a government that will deliver what our country needs most. We will protect Canadians during this crisis and build a stronger economy for the future,” he said on Thursday, referring to the trade war unleashed by the Trump administration.
Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and former head of the Bank of England, was elected last Sunday leader of the Liberal Party, a fundamental step to become the next Canadian Prime Minister, after the resignation of Justin Trudeau.
This Thursday, Trudeau said goodbye to the Canadian people and expressed being “proud to have served a country full of people who stand up for what is right, rise to the occasion at all times and always support each other when it matters most.”
“This may be my last day here in this office, but I will always be a Canadian bravely and unapologetically. All I ask is that no matter what happens, don’t change,” he emphasized in a message to the nation.
Today, Mark Carney will be named Prime Minister at a public ceremony in Ottawa before the country’s governor general, Mary Simon, who is acting as head of State on behalf of the British monarch.
According to a statement from the governor general, the swearing-in ceremony will be held at her official residence in Ottawa, which outgoing Prime Minister Trudeau will previously visit, where he will tender his resignation.
