The Sandinista executive released a statement regarding the meeting of Foreign Ministers from the regional mechanism held on Tuesday. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the list of three candidates proposed by Nicaragua. However, there was no consensus reached due to the “arbitrary and unfounded positions” taken by Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.
According to the release, these countries are interfering in Nicaragua’s internal and sovereign affairs, seeking to dictate and impose their political criteria and interests on sovereign matters that are solely the responsibility to decide of the Nicaraguan people and government.
Nicaragua described the agendas of the aforementioned countries as selfish and affirmed that they are far from the regional interest of finding a paths to harmony and unity. “These actions only promote division among the peoples and governments of the region, fostering the accelerated disintegration of this important regional space, an attitude that constitutes a clear violation of the Tegucigalpa Protocol,” it emphasized.
The statement urged the governments of the region to assume a responsible stance and act on the basis of the regional regulations and presidential agreements that govern SICA but above all, to adopt an attitude consistent with the interests of our peoples and concluded: “Nicaragua will not waver in its fight for respect for its sovereignty and national dignity.”
