Spain prepares a contingency plan against US tariffs

Madrid, Mar 26 (Prensa Latina) The Spanish Government is preparing a contingency plan to help sectors that could be affected if the US President, Donald Trump, applies the announced tariffs.

This was advanced today by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, speaking before the Congress of Deputies, in a speech devoted mainly to the thorny issue of defense, and also of the levies that Trump intends to impose.

“We are drawing up a National Contingency Plan to help the sectors of our economy that may be affected by this trade war,” Sanchez stressed.

He admitted, however, that a trade war is not desirable, but Brussels (European Commission), “which has the trade competences, will give the necessary response.”

“It is clear that we do not want a trade war, but if we have to wage that trade war, we are ready to wage it’, he specified in reference to the eventual position of the EU community bloc.

In this regard, he detailed that the tariffs proposed by Trump against countries such as Mexico, Canada or China, along with aluminum and steel worldwide are causing multi-billion dollar damage to the US economy.

The chief executive said the tariffs cause the collapse in the stock market of most US companies, without the tenant of the White House showing any signs of changing his mind.

“These measures are absolutely unfair and unjustified and Spain and Europe have done nothing to provoke or deserve these attacks,” Sanchez said when commenting Trump’s idea of applying tariffs of 26 percent to products from the EU.

While calling on Washington to come to its senses and engage in talks with the European Commission, he pointed out that if this does not happen, the EU will respond with proportionality, speed and unity.

Yesterday, the Government spokesperson, Pilar Alegria, stated that trade wars do not benefit anyone, “although we are ready to defend our productive sectors if the tariffs announced by the US affect nationals or Europeans.”
