Colombian government promotes energy solutions for poor communities

Bogota, Apr 8 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian government is promoting today a project through which families will be able to generate and sell energy in a communitarian way, which will alleviate electricity rates in the poorest neighborhoods of the Caribbean region.

According to the Minister of Mines and Energy, Edwin Palma, the approval of a regulation that will allow the implementation of the energy program called ‘Casas del Sol’, will benefit more than 500 thousand families thanks to the implementation of new self-generation and grouped generation schemes.

The projects, which include the installation of solar panels and other solutions, also seek to contribute to the transition of the Colombian energy model towards environmentally friendly forms of energy.

It is expected that the adopted standard will enable at least one additional gigawatt (GW) of installed capacity from Non-Conventional Renewable Energy Sources and increase the number of users with advanced metering infrastructure throughout the country.

“This measure will allow us to make way for the democratization and decentralization of energy, where users are at the center of energy development.”

“Besides having sustainable green energy, they will receive income from the commercialization of energy surpluses,” said Palma.

The official added that the solar panels will be subsidized by National Government funds.

According to reports, the resolution also introduces the so-called virtual aggregation of borders, which will allow the integration of users located in different places, as long as they belong to the same commercialization market and local distribution system.
