The measures include the application of 25 percent surcharges on purchases of a variety of U.S. products, including soybeans, eggs, cosmetics, textiles, and steel and aluminum products.
The package will enter into force in a staged manner as of April 15; for example, the first phase includes charges on certain vegetables, fresh and canned fruits, dried vegetables, tobacco, toilet paper, steel laminates and motorcycles.
The second stage is scheduled for the second half of May, while the third stage will begin on December 1 with the inclusion of agricultural products such as soybeans and almonds.
An official communiqué stressed that EU member countries voted in favor of the European Commission’s tariff proposal, although the bloc has expressed its clear preference for finding negotiated outcomes, which ‘‘would be balanced and mutually beneficial.’’
These countermeasures ‘‘can be suspended at any time if the United States accepts a fair and balanced negotiated outcome,’’ the EU executive announced.
