Dominican President Extends National Mourning Until April 13

Santo Domingo, April 10 (Prensa Latina) Dominican President Luis Abinader today extended the national mourning period for three more days following the recent tragedy at the Jet Set nightclub in the National District, where 221 people lost their lives.

Decree 195-24 signed by the president establishes that the mourning period declared on April 8, 9, and 10 will be extended until April 13.

Until Sunday, the national flag must fly at half-staff on military precincts and public buildings throughout the country.

The death of more than 200 people after the roof of the nightclub collapsed early Tuesday morning generated a wave of shock nationwide.

The director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), General Juan Manuel Méndez, confirmed that the collapse of the nightclub’s roof left 221 people dead, and described this mission as “the most difficult task” of his 20 years leading the organization.

The COE reported that the rescue efforts have concluded, although assistance to family members through various government institutions continues.

Dozens of families are still waiting for the bodies of their loved ones for burial, according to local media.
