Lavrov: Certain US elites prevent normalization of ties with Russia

Moscow, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) US President Donald Trump's intention to normalize US relations with Russia is encountering resistance from certain US elites, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Lavrov emphasized in an interview with Komersant newspaper that after three years of failure, it is not easy to break the deadlock, despite the wishes of the US president’s team.

In the official’s opinion, Trump and his team sincerely want to return to normality after the stupor reigning among the Washington elite (not only Democrats, but also some Republicans), but they are beginning to encounter resistance. “They are secretly preparing some maneuvers through lobbying groups and the media. We have read about it. Although it is not a secret. They want to prevent the US president from establishing relations with Russia in an adult manner, as befits two powers,” he added.

Lavrov noted that, just as before the formation of the UN, “Western colonizers” did not approach relations with others as equals, after 1945, the West never accepted the parties to the conflicts in which it actively intervened as equals. “That is why it is not so easy to restore normalcy,” he added.

The Minister recalled that former US President Joe Biden wanted to make Russia’s isolation “normal.” “This is complete nonsense. Of course, it has not materialized. (…) Dialogue is difficult, but it is being restored. The main thing is that there is a will on both sides, despite the problems and diverging national interests on various issues on the international agenda. It is necessary to meet as polite people and listen to each other. This is what is happening,” he emphasized.

The Foreign Minister also noted that as a result of the policies of the previous US administration, the parties are currently resolving “basic issues of the functioning” of diplomatic missions.
