The analysis, released on the occasion of the Alcohol Prevention Day 2025, promoted by the ISS, highlights that in this country there are about 780 thousand harmful consumers who require clinical treatment for physical or mental damage due to alcohol consumption, and only 8.1 percent are treated by the National Health Service.
The report, prepared by specialists of the National Alcohol Observatory (ONA) of that Italian health institution, based on data evaluated up to the year 2023 but still current, indicates that among the most vulnerable groups are minors, adolescents, women and the elderly.
Italy has approximately 36 million alcohol consumers, 77.5 percent of whom are men, and among those facing the greatest risks are 1.26 million people between the ages of 11 and 24, 615,000 of whom are minors, the study notes.
The most significant increase is observed among women who drink to excess, who went from 2.5 percentage points in 2013 to 4.5 percent ten years later, which represents an increase of 80.0 percent in that decade.
