The proclamation took place on April 16, 1961, during the funeral honors for the victims of the US bombings of the air bases of Ciudad Libertad, San Antonio de los Baños, and Santiago de Cuba.
At the burial of those fallen, historic leader Fidel Castro spoke to the people gathered at the emblematic corner of 23rd Avenue and 12th Street in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood and ratified before the world the socialist character of the emerging Cuban Revolution.
He said that day, “…And that we have made a socialist Revolution under the very noses of the United States, and that we defend that socialist Revolution with those rifles, and that we defend that socialist Revolution with the courage with which yesterday our anti-aircraft gunners riddled the aggressor planes with bullets.”
Soldiers and militiamen with rifles raised, workers, and the people in general approved the words of the outstanding leader, and ratified their willingness to defend the social process initiated in 1959 until the last drop of blood.
Fidel Castro also denounced the imminent invasion of Cuba, organized by the government of the United States.

Cuba conmemora aniversario 64 de proclamación de carácter socialista
La Habana, 16 abr (Prensa Latina) Los cubanos evocan hoy el aniversario 64 de la proclamación del carácter socialista de la Revolución, un hecho que marcó el camino en la construcción de un proceso social basado en el humanismo y la equidad.
Dicha proclamación ocurrió el 16 de abril de 1961 en las honras fúnebres de las víctimas de los bombardeos estadounidenses contra las bases aéreas de Ciudad Libertad, San Antonio de los Baños y Santiago de Cuba.
Durante el sepelio a los caídos el líder histórico, Fidel Castro, habló a un pueblo congregado en la céntrica esquina de 23 y 12 en la capitalina barriada del Vedado y ratificó ante el mundo el carácter socialista de la naciente Revolución cubana.
En esa ocasión expresó “…y que hayamos hecho una revolución socialista en las propias narices de los Estados Unidos, y que esa revolución socialista la defendemos con esos fusiles, y que esa revolución socialista la defendemos con el valor con que ayer nuestros artilleros antiaéreos acribillaron a balazos a los aviones agresores”.
Soldados y milicianos con fusiles en alto junto a trabajadores y pueblo en general aprobaron las palabras del destacado líder, y ratificaron su disposición de defender el proceso social iniciado en 1959 hasta la última gota de sangre.
Fidel Castro denunció también la inminente invasión a la isla, organizada por el gobierno de Estados Unidos.
