Unlike many other emerging market currencies, the rouble is not under pressure from capital outflows caused by global investors’ shift away from riskier assets, said T-Investments economist Sofia Donets.

And according to, head of research and equity management at Istar Capital, a Dubai-based company, Iskander Lutsko, the remarkable thaw in relations between Russia and the United States has also played a role in increasing the attractiveness of the Russian currency for investors.

“At this stage, there are no clear reasons for the rouble to weaken,” Lutsko said, emphasizing that the factors supporting it are likely to remain in place in the long term.

According to the Bank of Russia, the rouble’s real effective exchange rate (against the currencies of Russia’s main trading partners, taking inflation into account) increased by 7,1% in March compared to the previous month. On an annual basis, the rate increased 19,2% between January and March.
