The media reported Monday that thousands of displaced Sudanese citizens are fleeing the paramilitary offensive that is also affecting the Zamzam camp, where hundreds of civilians, including children and humanitarian workers, have already died.
UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan Clementine Nkweta-Salami, in turn, demanded that the Army and paramilitary forces protect the civilian population and allow humanitarian aid access to the displaced camps in North Darfur.
El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, the Army’s last bastion in that region, continues to be under siege by the so-called Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to political observers, the paramilitary forces are trying at all costs to seize El Fasher to turn it into the headquarters of their announced parallel government, as they control the five Darfur states.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in an internal war, following a power struggle between Army Chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and RSF leader, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
