Sheinbaum: Pope Francis’s death is a great loss

Mexico City, April 21 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called the death of Pope Francis a great loss, describing him as a humanist who chose the poor, peace, and equality.

“Pope Francis passed away. A humanist who chose the poor, peace, and equality. He leaves behind a great legacy of true love for one’s neighbor. For Catholics and non-Catholics alike, it is a great loss. Having known him was a great honor and privilege. May he rest in peace,” the president said on X.

This morning, the Vatican confirmed the death of Francis at the age of 88. He had reappeared yesterday for the Urbi et Orbi blessing while recovering from pneumonia.

Reactions of grief and respect from around the world were immediate.

Argentine Jorge Bergoglio, the first Jesuit and Latin American pope, was recognized for his pastoral sensitivity toward the poor, migrants, the most vulnerable, and his commitment to peace, among other causes.

This Monday, media outlets recalled his 2016 visit to Mexico, during which he toured several states and delivered a message of justice and closeness to the most vulnerable. jrr/arm/mem/la
