The mourning period will extend from Tuesday, April 22, at 06:00 hours (local time) to midnight on April 24.
According to the statement issued by local television, Pope Francis was active in solving global problems affecting humanity and the environment, and a fervent advocate for peace.
He coincided with Cuba on many issues of the international agenda during his long and outstanding trajectory as head of State and spiritual leader, the text stated, highlighting his contributions to strengthening respectful ties between this nation and the Holy See.
The document highlighted that, moved by deep feelings of affection for the Cuban people, he interceded to improve relations between the United States and Cuba, advocating that the US government set aside the blockade policy against this country.
The statement also recalled the ties of friendship that His Holiness maintained with Army General Raul Castro and the reception of President Miguel Diaz-Canel at the Holy See in June 2023.
On Monday, Army General Raul Castro said in a letter that he was deeply moved by the death of the man he considered a dear friend, and a man of integrity and consistency.
During the official mourning period, the national flag will be hoisted at half-mast on public buildings and military establishments.
