Costa Rica expectant before red alert declared for Poás volcano

San José, Apr 24 (Prensa Latina) Costa Ricans woke up today expectant due to the authorities' declaration of a red alert for the Poás volcano, whose eruptive activity has been increasing during the last weeks, according to local media.

The decision of the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention (CNE), recommended by the Technical Advisory Committee of Volcanology and Seismology, considered that the activity of the geological phenomenon in the northern province of Alajuela registers a strong and sustained increase that threatens the surrounding populations, according to the newspaper Delfino.cr.

The ash columns, toxic gases, and rock fragments ascend to four thousand meters high and impact several communities, including those of the Poás National Park, the center of tourist activity of that mountainous formation, also covered by the Red Alert.

The CNE emphasized that, under the state of red alert, the entrance to that installation is prohibited, since it represents the point of greatest danger due to the detachment of ballistic blocks, the intense emission of gases such as toxic sulfur, and the heap of ash.

The eruptive pulses of the volcano this week -added the sources- are the most intense of the month, so the CNE also raised to orange alert the districts of Grecia and Sarchí; and, to yellow, those of Río Cuarto, Zarcero, Naranjo, Poás and Alajuela, said the publication.
