Government rescinds contract to purchase ammunition from Israel

Madrid, Apr 24 (Prensa Latina) Under pressure from members of its coalition, the Spanish government announced today the unilateral cancellation of the contract for the purchase of ammunition from the Israeli company IMI Systems.

The contract was for purchasing 15.3 million bullets, for 6.5 million Euros, of 9×19 millimeters Parabellum Nato cartridges for the Guardia Civil.

The Executive pointed out that it will deny this company permission to import this material to Spain “for reasons of general interest”.

After having exhausted all the negotiating channels,” the Government’s Presidency, the Second Vice-Presidency headed by Yolanda Díaz, and the competent ministries decided to end the contract.

According to the sources, the State Attorney’s Office and the affected ministries are studying the response to possible legal reactions and claims by the Israeli firm.

From the opposition and leftist organizations such as Podemos, the resignation of the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, was demanded yesterday, when it was reported that he was going ahead with the purchase of ammunition because otherwise he would have to “pay the price to the company without receiving the contracted material, which was “necessary”.
