Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stressed that attempting to divide nations into warring blocs contravenes historical trends and global development and is destined to fail.
The official urged Washington to abandon coercive practices and focus on constructive actions. “We advise the United States, instead of wasting time pressuring Latin American countries to take sides, to make more concrete efforts in promoting stability and development in the region,” he said.
The spokesperson emphasized that Beijing has always promoted cooperation with the nations of that region based on principles of mutual respect, equality, shared benefits, openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation. “The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are sovereign and independent states, and other countries should not interfere, criticize, or exert overt or covert pressure,” he emphasized.
US President Donald Trump recently suggested that other countries should follow Panama’s example of canceling their participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and even hinted that they should choose between China and the United States.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statements come amid a tariff war between the world’s two largest economies, threatening to disrupt international trade.
