Syria and UNRWA discuss cooperation in education

Damascus, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Minister of Education Mohammed Turko and the director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Amanya Michael Ebye, discussed ways to improve educational cooperation.

During the meeting held at the Ministry of Education headquarters in Damascus, Turko said that the imposed economic sanctions are hindering reconstruction efforts, particularly in the education sector, and reiterated the Syrian government’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and guaranteeing children’s right to education.

The Minister praised UNICEF’s efforts to empower children and guarantee their rights, especially in the area of education, which he considered a fundamental pillar for the advancement of society.

According to SANA, during the meeting, the UNRWA delegation expressed its willingness to support school construction and teacher training, which would positively impact the quality of educational services. They also emphasized the priority of supporting displaced children in the camps to meet the needs, improve the infrastructure of schools and health centers, and facilitate children’s return to their villages to continue their education in a safe environment.

UNRWA plays a critical role in supporting the education process in Syria by managing designated schools for Palestinian refugees, providing curricula and educational materials, and offering psychosocial support programs for students in camps and war-affected areas.

The education sector in Syria faces challenges after suffering enormous damage during 14 years of war, which resulted in widespread destruction of educational infrastructure, putting thousands of schools out of service and forcing millions of children to abandon their schools.

The educational process also suffers from a severe shortage of qualified personnel and educational materials, making partnership efforts an urgent necessity with international organizations.
