Experts from the Forensic Anthropology Research Group of the University of the Republic are working in the basement of the building, in the Port of Montevideo, where a detention center operated during the de facto regime that prevailed between 1973 and 1985.
The investigation responds to information given to the advisor of the Ministry of the Interior, Diego Sanjurjo, who forwarded it to the National Human Rights Institution (Inddhh), with legal mandate to search for the victims of that de facto regime.
The government considered that the information received was “credible”.
The director of the Inddhh, Wilder Tayler told the press, “We are doing a reconnaissance of an area that is very extensive, that is full of materials, of garbage, where there is darkness and material accumulated there for many years”.
He clarified that this is a “preliminary” investigation, a “routine procedure” that is usually carried out and which could, or could not, “lead to an excavation”.
