Causes of massive blackout in Spain still unknown, says Sanchez

Madrid, Apr 28 (Prensa Latina) The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said today that the causes of the massive blackout affecting the Iberian Peninsula since midday cannot yet be conclusively determined and urged to avoid speculation.

It is better not to speculate, we will know the causes, we do not rule out any hypothesis’, he said in an appearance in this capital, after leading a meeting of the National Security Council.

The President insisted on the call to his compatriots to keep informed through official channels and that the authorities are working on the solution.

According to Mr. Sanchez, the most important thing at this moment is to return the electric service to all Spanish homes, a country that has been experiencing a massive blackout, together with Portugal, since 12:30 p.m. local time.

In this regard, he commented that in technical terms, an oscillation in the European electric system triggered the generalized interruption in the whole Iberian Peninsula and in areas of southern France, already resolved on French soil, with particular impact on sectors such as public transport, residential and commercial.

The head of the Government thanked the support of France and Morocco, which through interconnections helped to recover the service in some areas of Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castile and Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, the Basque Country and Navarre.

He also informed that the request of the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Extremadura and Madrid to move to civil protection emergency level 3 was accepted.
