Brazil: SC decides to keep former president Collor in prison

Brasilia, Apr 29 (Prensa Latina) The Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) of Brazil decided to maintain, by six votes against four, the imprisonment of former president Fernando Collor for corruption and money laundering, official sources confirmed.

The court had formed a majority in favor of the imprisonment last week. The favorable votes came from the rapporteur, Alexandre de Moraes, and justices Flávio Dino, Luís Roberto Barroso, Cármen Lúcia Antunes, Edson Fachin and Antonio Dias Toffoli.

On April 25, De Moraes ordered the imprisonment of the former president so that he could begin serving the sentence of eight years and 10 months in prison to which he was sentenced by the STF in 2023.

Justices André Mendonça, Gilmar Mendes, Luiz Fux and Kassio Nunes Marques voted Monday in favor of Collor’s release. Cristiano Zanin did not give his opinion because he declared himself incompetent: he acted as defense attorney in cases of the judicial operation Lava Jato.

Also last week, Mendes asked for a climax, i.e., that the case be voted on in the face-to-face plenary, but on Saturday he backed off and the virtual one was resumed this Monday.

Collor was arrested early Friday morning in Maceió, capital of the state of Alagoas (northeast). He is being held at the local headquarters of the Federal Police (PF).
