Syria calls for an end to Western sanctions and Israeli aggressions

Damascus, Apr 30 (Prensa Latina) Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani today called on the United Nations Security Council and the entire international community to lift sanctions and stop Israeli aggressions against Syria.

This position, published by the Syrian press, was expressed by the Foreign Minister in his speech during a Security Council meeting to discuss the situation in the Middle East.

He warned that the governmental endeavor faces a real threat, represented by the repeated Israeli air strikes that violate airspace and national sovereignty, and clarified that the pretexts that were used to justify these aggressions no longer exist.

These hostile actions not only constitute a flagrant violation of Security Council resolutions, but also destroy our civilian infrastructure and open the door to chaos, the head of Syrian diplomacy explained.

Al-Shaibani refuted all the misrepresentative narratives issued by the Israeli government, and specified that the Syrian people feel threatened by Tel Aviv due to the latter’s indiscriminate bombardments, forcing people to move from the villages adjacent to the border strip in southern Syria.

There is a national consensus among Christians, Kurds, Alawites, Druze and Arabs, who reject Israeli practices that seek to divide Syria and leave it fragile, chaotic and unstable, the Foreign Minister denounced.

He reminded the Security Council that after 58 years of its illegal annexation, the Golan remains under occupation, in flagrant defiance of UN principles.

On the other hand, the Foreign Minister said that the sanctions imposed on Syria by the United States and the European Union hinder the procurement of materials, financing and services necessary for reconstruction.

I call on the UN Security Council and the entire international community to lift these sanctions and allow Syrians abroad to return voluntarily with dignity and safety, the Head of State concluded his speech.
