Increasing cyber-attacks on state institution websites in Uruguay

Montevideo, May 1 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayan authorities expressed concern over the increase in cyber-attacks on official government websites since the inauguration of President Yamandú Orsi, it was reportedly stated.

The director of the Agency of Electronic Government and Information and Knowledge Society (Agesic), Daniel Mordecki, informed that these attacks have a clear political objective, with slogans that seek to damage the reputation of public institutions and generate media repercussions.

Agesic reported a significant increase in incidents against State sites.

In 2023, it registered 4968 aggressions, while in 2024 it increased to 14264, almost triple in just one year.

This week the Minister of the Interior, Carlos Negro, referred to the hacking episodes against the websites of public institutions in the three months of the current government’s administration.

During the month of March, the virtual site of the National Directorate of Civil Identification was attacked, where a photo of the President of the Republic and the director of Cybersecurity of Agesic was published.

In addition, the telephone number of the President of the Republic was leaked and a person linked to the attack was arrested.

During this period, there were also crashes of “.GUB.uy” sites and data leaks from several state institutions.
