Russia denounces rising tensions around Taiwan

Moscow, May 1 (Prensa Latina) Tensions around Taiwan are growing threatening stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region, Russia's Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu stated on Thursday.

The senior official said at an interview with TASS that the one-China principle is regularly violated by supplying arms, supporting the development of separatist sentiment among Taiwanese from abroad, and promoting Taiwanese identity.

Obviously, these provocative actions are undermining regional stability and security in the Asia-Pacific,” Shoigu said in the context of a session of senior BRICS officials and security advisors.

The Security Council secretary underscored that Russia’s stance on the Taiwan issue remains unchanged. “Moscow firmly supports China’s actions to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and reunify the country.”

The China-Taiwan ties were severed in 1949 after Nationalist Kuomintang Party forces suffered a defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party and moved to that archipelago.

Relations were restored only on business and informal levels in the late 1980s.
