Syrian FM calls for unity and rejects sectarianism

Damascus, May 1 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani considered on Thursday that national unity is the basis of any stability, rejected sectarianism and secession, and warned of the dangers of foreign intervention.

Al-Shaibani wrote on his X profile that any call for foreign intervention, under any pretext or slogan, only leads to further deterioration and division.

Regional and international experiences attest to the high cost paid by people as a result of foreign interventions, which are often based on national interests and serve agendas that do not favor the Syrian people’s aspirations, the head of diplomacy affirmed.

The diplomat pointed out that anyone calling for such intervention has a historical, moral, and political responsibility before Syrians and history, because the consequences of such calls do not end with immediate devastation but extend to decades of disintegration, weakness, and division.

He said the Syrian government believes that the path to stability lies through dialogue and a partnership between all components of the Syrian people, away from dictates and under the full Syrian sovereignty.

Al-Shaibani’s statement comes just a few hours after Syrian Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri issued a statement calling for “international protection,” which he considered a “legitimate right for a people decimated by massacres.”
