According to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (Binuh) 1,617 people died, 580 were injured and 161 were kidnapped between January and March of this year.
The report from the Binuh, disclosed by the digital site Haiti Libre, underlines that: “These numbers are mainly related to clashes between gangs, acts of collective justice, violence perpetrated by self-defense groups, as well as certain operations of the Haitian National Police”.
The most vulnerable population are especially women and children, in addition, Binuh counted 333 survivors of sexual violence, 96 percent of whom were raped by groups of gang members.
Among the victims of gang violence were 35 children killed and ten others injured.
The Binuh also exposed several cases of forced recruitment of minors into criminal groups.
Regarding human rights abuses, the international organization revealed that 25 detainees died in police custody during the quarter, raising serious concerns about conditions in Haitian prisons.
