Social sectors in Panama to go on strike against insurance law

Panama City, May 5 (Prensa Latina) Doctors, pharmacists, builders, nurses, indigenous people and students will support today in Panama an indefinite strike called by teachers demanding the repeal of Law 462, on reforms to the Social Security Fund (CSS).

The strike, joined by several social sectors, also condemns the intention of the Government of José Raúl Mulino to open the copper mine in Donoso (Colón), despite a ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice of November 2023, which declared the contract signed by the State unconstitutional and ordered the closure of its operations.

Other actions in several points of Panama also call for the defense of national sovereignty, due to the genuflecting posture of the Executive in the face of US pretensions to take over the Panama Canal and establish military bases, after the signing of a memorandum which they consider to be homeland selling, under the pretext of the fight against drug trafficking, irregular migration and organized crime.

The protests will also condemn the construction of a reservoir in Rio Indio (fresh water reservoir), to benefit the transits through the inter-oceanic route, despite the rejection of the native communities of that area.

In view of the tense climate, different political leaders signed a document rejecting the memorandum of understanding with Washington, which they consider harmful to sovereignty and contrary to the Constitution.
