Cristina Fernández defends herself in Argentina’s Supreme Court

Buenos Aires, May 6 (Prensa Latina) Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández challenged Supreme Court Justice Ricardo Lorenzetti, considering him impartial and insufficiently independent in a case for which she is facing a six-year prison sentence.

Fernández wrote on X that she made the decision with her defense team because Lorenzetti’s “independence, impartiality, and integrity have been severely compromised.” She added that “the real objective of the challenged official is to exclude me from the imminent electoral process, and in which, moreover, the deadlines have already begun to run.”

Former President Carlos Alberto Beraldi and Ary Rubén Llernovoy’s lawyers filed a challenge on Monday against Supreme Court Justice Ricardo Lorenzetti to prevent him from intervening in the so-called “Road Traffic Case,” which is currently being reviewed by the Supreme Court, according to the online version of the newspaper Página12.

The former president is sentenced to six years in prison and a lifelong ban from holding public office. The ruling was upheld last November by the Federal Court of Criminal Cassation, but her lawyers appealed to the Supreme Court to overturn the conviction, so the decision is currently in the hands of the Supreme Court, Página12 reports.

Cristina Fernández requested Lorenzetti’s non intervention because he is holding private meetings with President Javier Milei, moreover, last Thursday he announced in a television report that “he would promote a rapid process of our appeal before the midterm elections,” he stated, with the goal of upholding the conviction and enforcing the ban.

The judge stated that “there is no need to delay any further” the Supreme Court’s decision on the appeal filed to overturn her conviction.
