Malaysia hopes to strengthen ties with Singapore

Kuala Lumpur, May 6 (Prensa Latina) Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed on Tuesday confidence in strengthening relations with Singapore, following the victory of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) in the recent parliamentary elections.

Anwar Ibrahim congratulated his counterpart, Lawrence Wong, leader of Singapore’s main political formation, which won 87 of the 97 seats in the unicameral Parliament.

During a phone call to Wong, the Malaysian head of government celebrated the victory as a joint triumph of the prime minister and the PAP. He declared on his Facebook profile that the result demonstrates the great trust placed in them by Singaporeans.

He said Malaysia looks forward to working closely with Wong and his administration to strengthen long-standing bilateral ties, which are rooted in a shared history, strong economic cooperation, and close connections between the two nations.

He also recalled that Malaysia assumed the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in January 2025, a regional bloc comprising Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar, and Singapore.
