In the activity held at the State Duma (Parliament) in Moscow, Diaz-Canel was accompanied by the Cuban delegation participating in the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).
Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Senate (Russia’s Upper House of Parliament) and Alexei Shaposhnikov, chairman of the Moscow City Duma, led the activity on the Russian side.
Matviyenko mentioned the importance that on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet people’s Victory over Nazi Germany, six and a half decades of uninterrupted relations between the two countries are being commemorated.
The legislator added that despite the geographic distance between Cuba and Russia, there are coincidences in maintaining the historical truth against those who try to forget or change it.
Matviyenko stated that Russia will always stand by Cuba in its struggle against the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade and against the Caribbean nation’s inclusion in Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list.
