African regional body condemns attacks on Port Sudan

Djibouti, May 8 (Prensa Latina) The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) expressed on Thursday deep concern and unequivocal condemnation of the recent drone strikes on critical infrastructure and civilian areas in Port Sudan.

Through an official statement, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu rejected those violent actions that pose a serious threat to civilian lives and could further aggravate an already precarious humanitarian and political situation.

Gebeyehu stated, “These strikes on civilian infrastructure are unacceptable and must stop immediately.”

He underscored that Port Sudan has long served as a vital humanitarian and logistical resource for millions of Sudanese, and any further attack will exacerbate human sufferings and impede the delivery of urgently needed assistance.

He reaffirmed IGAD’s strong commitment to the peaceful resolution of the Sudanese crisis and urged all parties to cease hostilities with no delay and engage in an inclusive and constructive dialogue.

A Transitional Sovereign Council (TSC) source admitted that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the airport, the port, and a hotel in Port Sudan on May 5.
