According to the Cuban Music Institute (ICM), all provinces hold activities with dance groups and concert bands in squares and theaters; theoretical events on the history and universal projection of “son” music, casino dance exhibitions, and open dance classes.
Cuban Son Day was established on May 8 at the initiative of late maestro and musician Adalberto Alvarez (1948-2021) to pay tribute to one of the most authentic and deeply-rooted musical genres in the country’s identity.
The anniversary honors two iconic “son” singers who were born on this day in Cuba: Miguel Matamoros in 1894 and Miguelito Cuni in 1917.
As a tribute to them and many other maestros of this musical expression, groups such as the legendary Septeto Habanero, Conjunto Chappotin, and Candido Fabre and his band will give a great concert at the Havana-based Salon Rosado de La Tropical, the scene of main dance music groups in Cuba.
This year’s event is dedicated to the 510th founding anniversary of the village of Santiago de Cuba, the 100th founding anniversary of the Trio Matamoros band, and the work of maestro Electo Rosell (Chepin).
