Last night, after intense debates, the initiative did not reach the absolute majority of 37 votes required for its approval; the key was the rejection of the senators for Misiones, Carlos Arce and Sonia Rojas Decut, who in principle were allies of the Casa Rosada. The bill was defeated by a vote of 36 to 35.
“Ficha Limpia”, which already had the approval of the Lower House, sought to prevent any citizen with a judicial conviction confirmed in two instances for corruption crimes from being a candidate, even if the conviction has not yet become final.
Cristina Fernandez has one in process which she is appealing in the Supreme Court.
The Office of President Javier Milei, who took the lead in the crusade, issued a statement in which it said that the libertarian condemns and despises the parliamentary decision of the legislators.
He also promised “not to rest” until the bill becomes law.
Besides the party La Libertad Avanza, of Milei, and the PRO party, of former president Mauricio Macri, the Union Civica Radical party and the so-called provincialist senators were behind the project, in their campaign against Kirchnerism movement, especially against its main figure, former president Cristina Fernández.
Putting her in jail, or at least disqualifying her for life from holding public office in a year of legislative elections is the main desire of the political caste that today governs Argentina and its allies.
