A statement released by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers indicates that the president intervened in this way in the meeting held the day before in Kiev, with President Vladimir Zelenski, by leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland, Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz and Donald Tusk, respectively.
The head of government joined the proposal to seek a 30-day ceasefire, as well as to advance peace negotiations, but distanced herself from the initiative pushed mainly by Macron and Starmer, about the deployment of European military forces on Ukrainian territory.
During the debate, Meloni also reiterated the importance of the conference at the level of heads of state and government in support of the reconstruction of Ukraine, which will take place in the Italian capital on July 10 and 11 this year.
An analysis published on the website of the newspaper Il Giornale stresses that for Italy it could be counterproductive in the interests of peace to send these troops to Ukraine, “even outside the umbrella of the United Nations”.
