Uruguayans elect departmental and municipal authorities

Montevideo, May 11 (Prensa Latina) The polls are open today for Uruguayans to elect departmental and municipal authorities, closing a campaign where apathy prevailed and the citizens' vote is mandatory.

The latest data presented by the Electoral Court establishes that at the national level, there are more than 3,200 options of lists between departmental and municipal authorities.

The so-called Republican Coalition (CR), integrated by the National Party (PN), the Colorado Party (PC), and the Cabildo Abierto (CA) Party, presented under the same slogan in some departments to face the Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA), which won the presidential and parliamentary elections in late 2024.

The conditioning, custody, and transfer of the ballot boxes from the usual operation concluded on Saturday. The Armed Forces, in partnership with the Electoral Court and other national authorities, conducted this issue.

The National Army deployed more than 4,000 troops to perform duties in the 3,403 voting circuits distributed in 19 departments.

The polling stations opened at 08:00 hours (local time) and must close at 19:30 hours (local time) if no voters are lining up to vote.

The PN governs most of the departmental intendancies and municipal mayoralties, and some polls indicate that the country’s political map will have little changes.
