President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social last night after concluding the meeting, “Great progress made. “A very good meeting today (yesterday) with China, in Switzerland.”
He underscored, “Many things discussed, much agreed to. A total reset negotiated in a friendly but constructive manner. We want to see, for the good of both China and the United States, an opening up of China to US companies.”
However, CBS News said there were initially no immediate signs of progress during talks that exceeded 10 hours on Saturday between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
Neither side offered statements to the press at the end of the first summit, but Bessent said last week in an interview with Fox News that the meeting will focus on “de-escalation,” and not a big trade deal.
The Treasury secretary asserted that Washington and Beijing have “shared interests” because the sky-high tariffs on both sides are “not sustainable.”
